March 8th 2008 - It was a beautiful sunny day in the waters off Key West. It was just a few days before Christmas 2007. John Layfield had traveled to Key West, Florida to shoot some video for mamajuana energy. Joining him was the longtime friend of ZZ TOPP'S own Billy Gibbons, John Paul Shellnut. No, that is not a made up name. There is actually someone named John Paul Shellnut. Shellnut joined Layfield for a day of fun in the sun with some Key West beauties in the Atlantic. After a long day of shooting video for this very website, Layfield took a dip in the ocean to cool off and refresh. After a while Layfield was ready to get in the boat and head back to shore. Shellnut was in the boat Layfield was attempting to get in. Earlier in the day Shellnut fell down on the beach and scraped his knee. Well Shellnut somehow felt that Layfield was responsible for his small scrape and would not allow Layfield into the boat. After a short battle in which Shellnut used an unidentified weapon to strike Layfield with, Layfield held on the the side of the boat as Shellnut leapt for the throttle and hit the throttle full steam ahead! Layfield was pulled under the boat and hit the motor. His lower body was a mere fraction of an inch away from the speeding propeller. Had it not been for Layfield's instinct to avoid the propeller and the good fortune of lady luck not to mention the sheer stupidity of John Paul Shellnut, Layfield escaped certain death with thankfulness and hatred in his heart. One would think that Shellnut was remorseful. Not this John Paul Shellnut. Shellnut reacted with laughter.
This may sound like an embellished folk story. However due to the miracle of modern technology this entire incident was captured on videotape. You be the judge. In the weeks to come the video will be up on this site and you decide. In addition interviews with Layfield, Shellnut and the captain of the boat with each giving their version of the events that day.
